5 reasons to vote in the European elections between June 6 and 9

The first of May is the deadline to register to the electoral lists to vote in the European Elections between the 6th and 9th of June. SINGA shares 5 reasons why you should get out and vote.

From June 6 to 9, 2024, millions of Europeans will have the opportunity to shape the future of Europe at the European elections. These elections determine the new composition of the European Parliament, which plays a crucial role in drafting legislation and the European budget. As citizens, this is a unique opportunity to decide on the future of the European Union, and to influence the laws that shape our daily lives.

Here are five reasons why it is essential to get out and vote:

> So that our voices are represented in European decision-making. The European Parliament is one of the two legislative bodies of the European Union, and the only institution elected by direct universal suffrage.

> Because the European Union has an impact on our daily lives. From the environment and the economy to consumer rights and migration, decisions taken at European Union level have a significant impact on our daily lives. Access to healthy food; free movement within the Schengen area; the ban on single-use plastic bags… all these measures have been made possible by the European Union.

> Because the European Union offers a unique and protective framework of solidarity. In a complex global context where conflicts and tensions are multiplying, the European Union is playing an essential role in protecting its citizens, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic (grouped orders for medical equipment, lower prices on vaccine orders, etc.). Since the Russian invasion, it has demonstrated its solidarity by welcoming over 4.2 million Ukrainian refugees.

> Because the ecological transition is also a European issue. Voted by the European Parliament in January 2020, the Green Pact for Europe sets binding targets for reducing greenhouse gases: -55% by 2030; 0 net emissions by 2050.

> Because the European Union must make inclusion one of its priorities. At a time when the far right is gaining ground in France and Europe, it is crucial to vote in favor of the inclusion of exiles, to promote intercultural, diverse and open societies. This is the only way to counter the growing polarization of society, to alleviate fears and foster social cohesion.

By voting, you are giving a chance to a Europe that is more united, stronger and better prepared to face current and future challenges. For more information, click here.
